In 1980 few developers begin building the middle class homes and townhouses. This
specific development called the Barnstown Neighbourhood, and then rechristened Wellington Chase is bounded by Stone Church on the north, Rymal Road on the south, Upper Wentworth Street and Upper Wellington Street on the west.
Fifty years ago this community was just Elmar Farm, one of many farms scattered along highway 53 in Barton Township. However the Horning family sold that farm in 1960 and the land passed through a series of farmers, investors and developers. In the centre of the neighbourhood there is a beautiful park named Elmar Park.
The internal street system in Barnstown is based on curvilinear pattern. It has the advantage that it cuts down the speed of cars and also keeps the trough traffic out of these areas thus making the neighbourhood safe. Streets were given military-sounding names with majority connected to the French Revolution, like Bonaparte Way, Republic Avenue, Brigade, Josephine etc.
There are two schools in the center of this community St.Marguerite D'Youville and Helen Detwiler. The proximity to schools makes this neighbourhood very desirable to young middle-class families.
Average household income in this neighbourhood is $108 243, the average age of a home is in a range between 11-25 years. Majority of homes are owned with a very small percentage being rented. 70% of dwellings represent single detached homes and 30% row houses.
This area is loved by middle-class families because of Central Mountain location and proximity to all major conveniences like Limeridge Mall, grocery supermarkets (Fortinos and Food Basics) as well as newly built YMCA.
Population by age: age 0-14 (24%), age 15-24 (17%), age 35-44 (17%), age 25-34 (9%). Population in Barnstown (Wellington Chase) by marital status: married (56%), single (32%), divorced/separated (8%), widowed (4%).
